Renewables M&A in Europe: Enagás acquires a 31.5% in Teréga

Enagás kept the European gas landscape busy this week.

The Spanish TSO completed its EURm 573 acquisition of a 31.5% stake in France’s Teréga from Singapore’s GIC, becoming the operator’s second-largest shareholder behind Snam.

The deal ties gas networks in Spain and France more closely together via the Irún and Larrau interconnections, and deepens cooperation on the H2med hydrogen corridor between the two countries – one of several cross-border consolidation moves this week, alongside Qualitas Energy’s agreement to acquire Macquarie’s 5.8 GW Cero Generation platform spanning the UK, Italy and Spain.

A strategic move with long legs, literally spanning the Pyrenees.

And in other news this week:

  • BW ESS expanded its Spanish storage footprint, acquiring two Valencia BESS projects totalling up to 675 MWh from developer Navacant.
  • Eelpower Energy acquires the 50 MW/200 MWh Silkstead storage project (BESS). Silkstead is Eelpower’s fifth asset acquisition since the platform launched in September 2025.
  • French utility Engie SA has acquired a 66-MW/264-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in southern Spain.

Weekly summary | From September 2-9, 2026

The tracker logged 16 announced deals across Europe this week, and once again the story wasn’t the count, but where the capital landed.

Qualitas Energy alone set 5.8 GW in motion, taking over Macquarie’s Cero Generation platform spanning solar and BESS assets across the UK, Italy and Spain, making it the single largest portfolio to change hands this week.

Battery storage led with four deals, biomethane followed with two, and Spain topped the list with five transactions.

This week’s signature move was consolidation at the grid level: strategic investors tightening their grip on transmission and storage infrastructure rather than chasing new-build.

Enagás moved into Teréga’s shareholder base with a 31.5% stake bought from Singapore’s GIC, while Amancio Ortega exited his position in Portugal’s REN to state-owned Parpública

Crédit Agricole, meanwhile, agreed to take 50% of power firm Primeo Energie France from Qair and the Primeo Energie group.

Biomethane had its own quiet moment too. Rienergy ESCo sold five plants under development to a Spanish renewables investor, while Elevion Group picked up a new cluster in Alessandria from entrepreneur Anna Ventorino.

Disclosed figures, however, stayed scarce this week. Enagás’s EURm 573 purchase of the Teréga stake and Alantra’s EURm 120 acquisition of a Shell-owned investee portfolio were the only disclosed numbers.

Battery storage kept its rhythm regardless: Engie picked up a 66 MW/264 MWh standalone asset in Tarifa, Eelpower Energy acquired the 50 MW/200 MWh Silkstead project near Winchester, and BW ESS added 126 MW/up to 675 MWh across two Valencia projects from developer Navacant

Elsewhere, Foresight took on the Blackhillock synchronous condenser in Scotland, Vattenfall completed its purchase of Sweden’s Nima Energy, Berliner Stadtwerke acquired the Diehlo-West wind farm from JUWI.
